Cardiologist M.D. Invents Revolutionary Amplatzer Occluder for Ventricular Septal Defects
Chicago, Illinois – September 18, 2000 --
No newcomer to medical cases involving congenital heart disease, Dr. xxxx has 15 years of experience at both Chicago’s Children’s Hospital as well as University of Chicago Hospital. This device can save a patient, and insurance companies, thousands of dollars from the conventional Open-Heart surgery requiring cracking open a patient’s chest with months of recovery ahead of them. In addition, a patient who has Open-heart surgery can expect to spend additional months participating in cardiac rehab, costing them time at work. Dr. xxxxxxx’s amplatzer is unique because it doesn’t have ‘teeth’ which may grab on to valves, which could cause cardiac arrest. Availability of his device will have children and adults with this congenital problem back to every day life within a few days. No Open Heart surgery required. Instead this occluder is threaded through a vein via a catheter through a tiny incision in the groin. The catheter, with the occluder, is then threaded to the hole then dropped into place. Its expansion capabilities close the hole and heart tissue eventually grows over the device.
According to Dr. xxxx, "The question I get most often is, 'Is this device an option for me?' My job is to evaluate the potential outcomes of the traditional Open Heart Surgery versus the less-invasive threaded catheter procedure. If a patient is determined to be a good candidate for my occluder, then it is reasonable for them to opt for this choice. It can be compared to having your gallstones removed the old way, with a large incision that cuts through stomach muscles, requiring extensive recovery—not to mention pain and discomfort-or, the laproscopic surgery-also known as ‘band-aid surgery’, with an overnight stay and a week or so of discomfort. This cardiac procedure requires one overnight at the hospital, and you’re back to work within a week.” The patent for the device is held by its inventor, Dr. xxxxx, and is currently being evaluated by the FDA for use in the United States. Presently, Dr. xxxxx is performing this surgery in many other countries with great success.
Dr. XXXX serves on the faculty of a major U.S. medical school affiliated with a top-rated tertiary care medical center. He sits on state medical boards as an expert reviewer and expert witness in cardiac cases. He has written books, and numerous scientific papers, as well as articles in the medical journals, received honors and awards in medical teaching and scholarship, and has 11 years of academic cardiology experience ranging from Post Cardiac Care Unit Director and Outpatient Surgical Unit Director to his current position as Clinical Associate Professor of Cardiology.
Dr. xxxxx is a member of the American Board of Cardiology. He has been an invited reviewer and lecturer in Cardiology throughout the U.S., Asia, South America, Middle East and Europe and has appeared on CNBC.
Accessibility is a unique and important aspect of Dr. xxxxx's services. His expertise in cardiology is available to his colleagues, patients, and potential patients, at any time. As an educator, he does speaking-and training- engagements all over the globe, to include the International Cardiac Conference.
